Here is my final self-reflection for the course, PUB 448.
Summarize what work you completed for PUB448. In addition to the three mandatory self-reflections (this one included), how many of the other 13 assignments did you complete? Did you pass all of them?
I completed all 4 reading reflections and 4 media analyses. I also completed 3 creative outputs as well as 3 self-reflections. Therefore, I completed and passed all assignments.
Return to your first two self-reflections. What did you identify as your goals, challenges, and areas for potential improvement? Did you follow through on your plans, achieve your goals, and see the improvement you were hoping for?
For my first self-reflection, I identified my goals to be understanding how media consumption impacts the way I view, define, and understand social change. I wanted to understand the connections between how I perceive social issues based on the media I consume. I also wanted to gain practical skills and strategies in creating and publishing media for social change. I feel that I have followed through with these goals as I now understand how the medium can impact how the social topic is portrayed, whether it benefits the topic, how creators take advantage of the medium, as well as how it can reach the desired audience. I understand now that the message or topic can vary in impact and effectiveness based on multiple factors, with the medium being an important one. And since we all had a chance to experiment with the creative outputs, I also now understand the practical approaches to creating and publishing media and how to utilize the platform to its most advantage to send a message.
As for my second self-reflection, I had wanted to improve on sharing my thoughts to the class and to my classmates. I felt that I had improved on this aspect as I had become more comfortable and confident in sharing my opinions and reflections to my peers. As the semester went on, I had a chance to meet other classmates and even befriend others as we all experienced the semester together. Therefore, I feel more confident in being able to express my opinions and share my ideas in public as the wonderful class and professor has made it easy and comfortable to do so.
Tell me about the most important new ideas and/or skills you developed in PUB448, and how you might draw on them in the future.
I developed an awareness and recognition for the publishing mediums used within each piece of media. I feel that this course gave me a deeper understanding into the specific mediums of zine, posters, podcasts, and YouTube videos as we were able to engage with them in a deeper way by learning how to create them. I also learned about zines and the value of postering which has made me want to engage further with these mediums. Lastly, I gained the skill of making and editing a podcast which was a first in my book. The process of planning it with my group mates, Celine and Maryam, was so much fun. Our conversations and ideas worked well together which helped me learn the importance of having a good team/co-host when making a podcast. Editing the podcast was also quite challenging but a good learning experience. Because of what I learned in this course and the low barriers to access, I can definitely see myself establishing a real podcast in the future.
Bragging time: what’s the one thing you’re most proud of in this course, and why? You are not allowed to say “nothing”!
I'm proud at how I was able to keep up with all assignments! I didn't expect to complete all but I'm happy that I was able to do so. I am also proud of each creative output I made: the poster, the zine, and the podcast. The most rewarding experience truly was engaging with the different platforms and ending off this course with these creative outputs that I can use as part of my portfolio and showcase my skills. Overall, I'm proud of myself for surviving through this semester and being able to balance all 4 courses with other commitments while maintaining my sanity.
Any final thoughts?
I want to say thank you to Hannah for being such a great professor. PUB 448 was my favourite class this semester and I always had the most fun participating and engaging with course material and with my peers. Thank you for making this semester so comfortable and flexible and I wish you all the best on your sabbatical, Hannah! <3
